In the era of USSR Donetsk was known as the “City of a million roses” because all the streets and parks were covered with a various species of beautiful roses of different colors. In 1970 UNESCO declared Donetsk “The Best industrial city of the World”. In April 1978 the population of Donetsk was more than one million people and that is why it was called “The Millionaire City”. However, because of the demographic crisis the population had been reduced, according to statistics current population of Donetsk is over 982,000 inhabitants. Donetsk is the fifth-largest city in Ukraine.
